Both of my kids have been having the bouts of cough and flu, especially Noah since January this year. The doctor said that he has a bad sinus that his nose could not filter off the germs and that causes him to get sick easily. I have been taking him to the doctor’s clinic almost every other week since the beginning of the year… And I hate the fact that I even had to pull him out of playschool as he had to skip class every few days/weeks due to his sickness…
Zayd had been warded for 3 days last 2 weeks due to acute bronchilitis. At 5 months of age, it is heart-breaking to see my baby to go through such ordeal. I kept on praying to Allah to get him out of his misery and just let me bare the pain. I just could not stand to watch him in pain every time they try to give him the nebulizer… Kesian ok…
As a mother, I wish I could be by my sons’ side every single day, especially when they are sick. However, as a working mother, I also have the duty to show up at work and perform my role in order to fulfill my KPI. Hence, my mind would not be at peace every time I had to go to work when I know my sons are unwell…
I do not know whether my current superior understands my situation right now. I have been taking annual leave and emergency leave quite frequent for the past 3 months plus. What makes it worse is that I just came back from maternity leave in January. I do not want to be marked as an under performing employee just because I have been taking leaves because I make sure that I complete and deliver my work on time as required. However, knowing him, he will definitely take my leaves as a factor during the appraisal session later.

Thank God I am venturing into this SOHO online business and building up my coffers in order for me to take a permanent leave from work. The income that I get from this business is growing exponentially and I am praying hard that the day will come very soon that I would be able to stay at home with my sons and provide them with the attention and care that they need. Balancing work, leave and the sick child
It is never easy to deal with sick children especially when you are a working parent. This is the dilemma that working parents face. It is actually a tough decision whether to take leave or leave the kids with relatives or a babysitter.
Most working parents feel guilty having to send their sick children to the day care centre, but sometimes they are left with no choice especially if they don’t have a helper nor supportive relatives, and they have exhausted their annual leave.
Social media executive Diana Roslam, 28, finds herself in a fix each time she has to take her child for her immunisation jabs or when one-year-old Emma Arianna falls ill. Her husband works out of town and although her extended family is ever supportive, the onus is on her to take care of her child at such times.
“I’m lucky that the place that I’m working at is close to home. I get 15 days off in a year. But it’s only April and I’ve already used up seven days; four days in the hospital and three days of her having fever due to teething. I find myself counting the days left and sometimes saying ‘No’ to having a couple of days off from the hectic-ness at work just because I want to keep the leave for ‘Emma-gencies’.
“As a mother to a young toddler, I feel guilty leaving her at home but if I were to give up my job, I would not be able to provide her the future that my husband and I want for her. We wouldn’t be able to buy her toys, educational books, diapers and milk, among other things. For now, my priority is to balance work and family, and at the same time, try to hold on to whatever makes my baby happy.
“I love my baby and would do anything for her. If I could, I’d stay home with her and teach her all the things that I want her to know, but I don’t have the luxury of doing so. There are bills to be paid and of course, THAT piece of paper that I worked hard on when I graduated from university,” explains Diana.
